A jury made up of professional novelists, editors, teachers, poets, librarians, journalists and other professionals judged these works and selected the winners from over 1880 works submitted. Seven of the 158 students given a gold key, the highest level, were from Somers Central School District and 40 separate works from Somers were honored.
